Byran Pierre Williams was at the wheel of a 2004 Chevy Tahoe March 20 when state troopers assisting the GBI in a drug investigation tried to stop him on Barnesville Road. Williams maneuvered his car to strike a GSP vehicle which sent the patrol car careening off the road, flipping multiple times. The trooper, 26-year-old Jhordann Ovitz Barker, suffered minor injuries.
The chase continued onto Hwy. 36 toward Barnesville with the occupants of the Tahoe throwing drugs out the windows. Sgt. Michael Brayton of the LCSO successfully pitted the Tahoe near the Pennington home place. The Tahoe ran off the road, skidded some distance and struck a tree.
The passenger in the SUV, 41-year-old Vincent Hughes of Barnesville, was dead at the scene.
At last report, Williams was in a rehab facility with spinal injuries. The state patrol has taken out warrants on him for first degree vehicular homicide and felony murder.
The sheriff’s office has taken out warrants charging Williams with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, tampering with evidence, fleeing and attempting to elude and littering. More charges are possible as the investigation continues.
The two counts of aggravated assault arise from Williams running the trooper and a Lamar deputy of the road.
Williams has a long, extensive record of incarcerations at the Lamar jail that dates at least back to 2005. He was arrested on a total of 25 counts, 18 of which were drug related.
