Williamson man charged with DUI after Saturday morning crash

A early morning high-impact collision Saturday at the intersection of Rose Avenue and Veterans Parkway in Barnesville resulted in a Williamson man being lifeflighted to the Macon Medical Center with serious injuries and facing DUI and other charges. ******************** NOTICE: This story and photo(s) are under copyright. They may not be republished or disseminated in any form or format – including social media – without explicit permission. ********************* The collision involved a 2018 Dodge Challenger and a 1995 Chevy Silverado. The Challenger, driven by Eddie Byars, 72, of 325 Gordon Road, was northbound on the four-lane when the eastbound pickup, driven by Eddie McDowell, 57, of 583 West Williamson Road in Williamson, ran the red light at a high rate of speed. The Challenger t-boned the truck, according to a preliminary state patrol report. McDowell was airlifted to the Macon trauma center where he was in critical condition at noon Wednesday. He has been charged with DUI, reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control device and no seatbelt. Byars was taken to Spalding Regional with non life-threatening injuries.
