Women’s basketball dunks mens’ soccer at Gordon

Gordon College is in the process of hiring a women’s basketball coach in anticipation of forming a women’s basketball team for fall 2013. ’Our men’s basketball team has consistently grown in popularity and skill ever since it was developed five years ago,’ said Todd Davis, Gordon’s athletic director. ‘We anticipate the same for our new women’s team.’ While women’s basketball is being added to the roster of team sports offered at Gordon, some sports are being suspended due to budget constraints and lack of participation. Men’s soccer is being discontinued as is women’s tennis, and women’s golf. ’We looked at both the budget and participation level before making our decision,’ said Davis. ‘There were also Title IX requirements to consider and what sports best serve our student population.’ Men’s golf will still be offered as will women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, softball, baseball and men’s basketball. Gordon just completed a history-making year with the basketball, softball and baseball teams all playing in national tournaments. ’It has been a great year for sports and for our student athletes,’ said Davis. ‘We’re looking forward to another great year and to new opportunities for our student athletes.’
